Everybody means to move in the summer holidays.<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

It is the plan every family starts with. Six clear weeks, no uniforms, no school run, unpack in August and walk into September like nothing happened.<\/span><\/p>\n

Then the sale takes longer than anyone expected, or the right house appears in the second week of term, or the rental you wanted comes free in October. And suddenly you are moving in the middle of a school year with a maths test on Thursday.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is far more common than the summer plan suggests, and it goes perfectly well. It just needs a slightly different set of decisions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why do so many families end up moving mid-term?<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n

Mostly because property does not run on a school timetable. Chains move at their own speed, a buyer’s mortgage takes three weeks longer than anyone allows for, and the house you actually want comes to the market in September rather than May. If you are renting, availability depends on when other people give notice, not on half term.<\/span><\/p>\n

So waiting for the next summer holiday is a real option, but it can cost you the right home, and a year is a long time to live somewhere you have already decided to leave.<\/span><\/p>\n

What should you sort with the school first?<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n

If the children are changing school, this is the part that most needs a head start, and it is the part most often left until the move is agreed.<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Talk to the local council, not just the school. Moving during the school year means an in-year admission, and that runs through the council for the area you are moving to. Start it as early as you sensibly can.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Do not assume a place. A school that looks perfect can be full in the year group you need, even if it has space elsewhere. Ask specifically about the year group, and ask what happens if there is no place.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Have a second and third choice you would genuinely be happy with. This is the single thing that turns a stressful admissions process into a manageable one.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Tell the current school early. They can prepare records, flag anything the new school should know, and quietly give your child a bit of extra support in the last few weeks. Most schools are very good at this if you give them time.<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Check the transport reality, not the map. A twelve-minute drive at eleven in the morning can be forty at half past eight. Drive it once at the actual time before you commit.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    If the children are staying at the same school, the job is simpler but not nothing. Tell the office your new address and contact details, and think carefully about whether the new journey works every day in February, not just on a bright day in September.<\/span><\/p>\n
