But whatever form it takes and wherever it occurs, there\u2019s no excuse for bullying.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>As this week is Anti-Bullying Week, let\u2019s look at how widespread bullying is, the signs to look out for and how best to deal with it.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #bda762;\"><strong>How common is it?<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>While there may be a greater awareness of bullying these days, there\u2019s still a lot of work to do to stamp it out.<\/p>\n<p>22% of people aged 12 \u2013 20 say they experienced bullying in the last year*. While in the workplace, one in ten workers say they\u2019ve been bullied, and 47% say they\u2019ve observed bullying**.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #bda762;\"><strong>Signs and impact<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Bullying can be hugely detrimental to someone\u2019s mental health. It stops people from living their lives as they wish and can cause illness, anxiety and depression and result in self-harm or suicidal thoughts.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #bda762;\">Signs a child may be experiencing bullying<\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Unexplained injuries<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty sleeping or bedwetting<\/li>\n<li>A reluctance to go to school and an increase in headaches or tummy upsets<\/li>\n<li>Altered eating habits<\/li>\n<li>Their schoolwork may go downhill<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #bda762;\">Signs an adult may be experiencing bullying in the workplace<\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Loss of confidence and motivation<\/li>\n<li>Anxiety or depression<\/li>\n<li>Increased absence from work<\/li>\n<li>Reduced performance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #bda762;\"><strong>What to do if you experience bullying<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Talk to someone you trust about what you\u2019re experiencing, and consider raising the issue with someone in authority who can take action. (You may discover that other people have raised concerns about your bully\u2019s behaviour, too.)<\/p>\n<p>Also, keep a record of when incidents occur so that if your complaint escalates, you have times and dates to back up your story. Most importantly, don\u2019t blame yourself. The bully\u2019s behaviour, not yours, is the problem.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #bda762;\"><strong>What to do if you witness bullying<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>If you\u2019re concerned that someone is being bullied, raise the issue with them privately.
